The Summit Conference
Spring 2022

The Summit Conference (CBFVA), Spring 2022

We are excited to be hosting The Summit conference the weekend of March 25–27th! This is an event sponsored by the Cooperative Baptist Fellowship of Virginia (CBFVA) which hosts youth from around the state for this a weekend of learning, worship, fun, and growth. The Summit conference focuses on issues of the intersection of advocacy and justice in our spiritual lives.  Many of our youth (middle and high schoolers) will be participating in this event, and we would love for YOU to consider volunteering to support the youth for this exciting event!

From CBFVA's website:

Location: Williamsburg Baptist Church
Date: March 25-27
Cost: FREE to our youth

Theme: This year, our theme is “Dwell.” Our speaker, Rev. Meg Lacy Vega, will be helping us to consider how to “dwell” in a world where everyone seems so divided. How do we live in community together when so many demonize those they disagree with?

Furthermore, what is our role in seeking justice for the world as we seek to “Dwell” in God’s World? This is such an important conversation in our current context!

In addition to worship, we will be hosting a “Rise Against Hunger” event, participating in exciting breakout sessions (led by Braxton Kemp. Carrie Cheatum, Todd Blake and others) and we will have a huge big game party on Saturday Night! You will also have a couple of hours of free time on Saturday so your group can go do something fun in Williamsburg!

This is one of my favorite events and I hope you all are planning to participate. The Summit will start on Friday Night with registration from 6-9 and will end by 10 am on Sunday morning.

Carrie Cheatham - Art of Hospitality
If we look around at the people that make up our communities, we may see that we have neighbors that don't talk our language or look like us. They may be cashiers at the grocery store, our delivery drivers, or the kitchen staff at our favorite restaurant. Oftentimes these key people in our communities are refugees. They are people who packed a small bag and left everything they've ever known behind for a their families to have a safe place to lay their head at night.

Once I realized how many refugees were dwelling in my own community, I took a step to support them by creating art. I started a business creating greeting cards that supported our refugee neighbors by giving a portion of what I make back to non-profits that are working directly with our refugee neighbors. Each work of art, whether a birthday card or a thank you card, supports the new lives of our newest neighbors. This work is important because I use art as a way to talk about refugees in our communities with people who may not even realize they're among us. It may seem small, but the impact is HUGE. I can't wait to create a lasting impact with each of you in just a few short weeks!

Meg Lacy Vega - Embodied Spirituality
Dwelling with God through Body and Breath . . . . In this workshop we will us the tools of Yoga (movement, breathe, postures) to learn how our bodies can impact our spiritual lives. You do not have to be familiar with yoga, or by physically fit, to participate. All bodies are welcome for this gentle practice of movement, meditation, and prayer, and an invitation to dwell with God in mind, body, and spirit.

Beth Rooney - Identity Portraits
Students will be dwelling on who they are and who they want to become by creating self-portraits. Using words, figures, and images, youth will create a collage portrait of themselves and will have a chance to be creative in describing who they are today and who they want to be as a part of the kingdom of God.

Braxton Kemp - Enneagram
The enneagram is a personality system that shows us the nine ways people in the world act/react in life. The enneagram explains the “why” of all that we do, think, and feel. When we delve into the enneagram, we better understand how we were uniquely created by God, and we are able to grow deeper.”

Picture
Daniel Scruggs - Drum Circle
In this fully facilitated experience, students will learn about different cultures of the world by playing traditional rhythms together on professional "djembe" style drums.   This fun and interactive learning adventure will also allow participants to experience the sounds and stories of rare musical instruments from around our world.

Val Fisk - Connecting with Faith Communities in College:
You grow up in church, you hang out with your youth group, you go to events like Summit – but what do you do when you get to college? How do you find Christian groups to connect with after you graduate high school? This session will cover tips for how to find the on-campus groups available to you, how to check out churches near your college, how to figure out what type of church you want to visit, and how to get connected with those communities so that you have a support system and faith community in college.

Rise Against Hunger
