Book Discussion Group: Love Does, by Bob Goff
Starts: Sunday, July 7, 2024 Sundays, 9:30–10:30am, in person (in West Wing Sunday school room 105) Facilitator: LeAnn Bennett As a college student he spent 16 days in the Pacific Ocean with five guys and a crate of canned meat. As a father he took his kids on a world tour to eat ice cream with heads of state. He made friends in Uganda, and they liked him so much he became the Ugandan consul. He pursued his wife for three years before she agreed to date him. His grades weren't good enough to get into law school, so he sat on a bench outside the Dean's office for seven days until they finally let him enroll. Bob Goff has become something of a legend, and his friends consider him the world's best-kept secret. Those same friends have long insisted he write a book. What follows are paradigm shifts, musings, and stories from one of the world's most delightfully engaging and winsome people. What fuels his impact? Love. But it's not the kind of love that stops at thoughts and feelings. Bob's love takes action. Bob believes Love Does. When Love Does, life gets interesting. Each day turns into a hilarious, whimsical, meaningful chance that makes faith simple and real. Each chapter is a story that forms a book, a life. And this is one life you don't want to miss. Light and fun, unique and profound, the lessons drawn from Bob's life and attitude just might inspire you to be secretly incredible, too. We will meet in the West Wing room 105. Enter in the right door from the parking lot, go up the short flight of stairs, turn right down the hallway, and you'll see us in the second room on the left—door will be open! Contact LeAnn Bennett or Bill Bogdan with any questions. We hope you'll join us! |
AFTER EVANGELICALISM: by David Gushee
Starts: Sunday, Jan. 14th, 2024 Sundays, 9:30–10:30am, in person (in West Wing Sunday school room 108) Facilitator: Erica Berkshire Evangelicalism continues to be one of the most popular “flavors” of Christianity in the United States today. As a result, many seem to think that Inerrancy, indifference to the environment, purity culture, racism, LGBTQ discrimination, male dominance, and Christian nationalism go hand-in-hand with following Christ. It’s largely because of these things that many people have moved through a period of “deconstructing” their faith or have lef the church altogether. How do we understand our own relationship to this particular expression of Christianity as people of faith, and how do we move beyond this understanding to one that is rooted in the witness of Jesus and faithful to what it means to be God’s people today? We will meet in the West Wing room 108. Enter in the right door from the parking lot, go up the short flight of stairs, turn right down the hallway, and you'll see us in the room at the end of the hall—door will be open! Note: we may move down to the Social Hall if we get a big crowd! We encourage you to get a copy of the book in advance, or let us know in the church office and we’ll be glad to get you a copy. Contact Art Wright or Erica Berkshire with any questions. We hope you'll join us! |
