UNCLOBBER by Colby Martin
Starts: Sunday, April 16th Sundays, 9:30–10:30am, in person (in West Wing Sunday school room 105) Facilitator: Art Wright We are excited to start a new, 7-week adult spiritual formation series soon on UnClobber: Rethinking Our Misuse of the Bible on Homosexuality, by Colby Martin! Armed with only six passages in the Bible―often known as the "Clobber Passages"―the traditional Christian position has been one that stands against the full inclusion of our LGBTQ siblings. UnClobber reexamines each of those frequently quoted passages of Scripture in such a way that sheds divine light on outdated and inaccurate assumptions and interpretations. WBC has officially been a fully Welcoming and Affirming congregation since 2017. Since making that decision, however, we have not really had a conversation like this where we examined "what the Bible really says" about sexuality. Our hope is that this series will be a way to peel back shame and guilt from centuries of misuse of Scripture, equip (or re-equip) ourselves to have important conversations with others, and further encourage us as a congregation to extend our welcome and full inclusion to all people. This group will meet for seven Sundays. Note we may move down to the Social Hall if we get a big crowd! We encourage you to get a copy of the book in advance, or let us know in the church office and we’ll be glad to get you a copy. Contact Art Wright (pastor@williamsburgbaptist.com) or our Christian Education Council with any questions. We hope you'll join us! We are meeting in the West Wing room 105. Enter in the right door from the parking lot, go up the short flight of stairs, turn right down the hallway, and you'll see us in the second room—door will be open! SEARCHING FOR SUNDAY by Rachel Held Evans
Starts: Feb. 19, 2023 Sundays, 9:30–10:30am, in West Wing Sunday school room 105 Facilitator: David Schuster and Art Wright We are starting a new, 8-week adult spiritual formation series on Rachel Held Evans’s wonderful memoir, Searching for Sunday: Loving, Leaving, and Finding the Church. With Evans’s delightful honesty and wit, she writes of her struggles with church: the hypocrisy, politics, gargantuan building budgets, scandals, and church cultures that seem so far removed from the teachings of Jesus. And yet, in spite of all of this, something keeps drawing her back. If you’ve ever struggled with “church,” this book is for you! This book group will meet for eight Sundays starting Feb. 19th (9:30–10:30am). We encourage you to get a copy of the book or let us know in the church office, and we’ll be glad to get you a copy. We will meet in West Wing room 105 (first floor). A Zoom option may be available, too—just ask! We really would love for you to join us! Let Art Wright (pastor@williamsburgbaptist.com) or David Schuster know if you have any questions. We are meeting in the West Wing room 105. Enter in the right door from the parking lot, go up the short flight of stairs, turn right down the hallway, and you'll see us in the second room—door will be open! |
